An Interactive Never Ending Story
---------------------------------
The Adventure Brain is an interactive adventure game in which YOU
the user, get to actively make decisions that will lead you through
adventures created by other players. Each time you enter The Adventure
Brain, you can take a different path, and experience different outcomes.
When you reach the end of an adventure, you have the ability to add to it,
creating more, so that the next person may go a bit farther.
Choices can be made by using these commands:
[A] - Follow the action described.
[B] - Follow the action described.
[P] - Go back one step in the adventure. This is useful
if you make a bad choice, and want to choose a different
path. You are allowed to go back one level. This option
only appears if there is a previous scene.
[S] - Save your game position for later.
[L] - Load a previously saved scene from from any game.
Select from any active game that you have saved data.
[Q] - Quit the current adventure and choose another, or
exit the game and return to the BBS.
Here is an example of an adventure:
You are in a dark room. After some inspection, you manage to locate
a candle. Lighting it, you shiver rapidly, and yawn from exhaustion
which was caused by lack of sleep. You are too afraid to go to
sleep because it is rumored that Norman Bates is near bye, and is
as crazy as ever, and ready to kill! Suddenly, you hear a slowly
tapping footstep outside of the door. It must be Norman!
What will you do?
[A] Attack the person behind the door, as soon as he opens it.
[B] Hide behind the old card table.
[P]revious scene
[S]ave this position
[L]oad a saved game
[Q]uit this adventure
At this point, you make your move, and continue on to the next scene.
However, if this was the last scene in the adventure, you could add
your own scene! This is very easy to do, and can be lot's of fun.
When entering a scene you should use common sense, and make sure that it
is not derogatory to anyone. The game logs all scenes entered, and the
sysop could become rather angry with you if you were to leave an awful
scene! When you enter a scene, you have up to six lines for the
description. When done entering the description, The Adventure Brain
will ask if the player will DIE in this scene. If you you answer yes,
this will end the game for the player! If the player does not die in this
scene, you can then enter the two choices available in the scene.
The Use Of Variables
Variables are special commands The Adventure Brain understands, and will
make it perform certain functions. Here is a list of available variables...
*player name* - This Variable will insert the player's name within
the scene description.
*question* - This causes the Adventure Brain to pause the game, and
ask the player to answer a question. Example:
As you shut the door, a voice behind you says
"Don't turn around or else. So matey, what be
your name?" *question*
This scene would allow the user to type in some-
thing, such as his name, etc.. No text should
follow *question* on the same line. For instance.
3 >"Who are you, kind sir?"*question*
No text should follow *question*.
4 >"You say you're who?"
*answer* - Use this Variable with *question*. It will
display whatever was typed during the last
*question* input. For example:
2 >What do they call ya, dude?*question*
3 >Cool, your name is *answer*, heh?
This shareware version of STORY BRAIN does not come with any stories,
so to get started, just run the game and select [A]dd a Story...
Follow the prompts and away you go!
Once you have created a story, you can use the [E]ditor to perform
many editing tasks. Some options include:
Change a Story Title
Search for words in a scene
Display Scenes
Go to Specfic Scenes
Search and Replace words
Add or Delete lines in a scene
Once inside the editor, you may also [R]emove an entire story file.
The limit of scenes you may add to a story, and the number of stories
is only determined by the available disk space!
NOTE: The unregistered version is limited to 50 scenes, and one story.
Registration will allow you to call The Brainex BBS and download
all the latest STORY files, so you can add them to your game.
Story Brain supports com ports opened up to 115200 and as many of them as
you can fit in the machine. This makes Story Brain easy to set up on a
multi-node system with GAP.
Story Brain Files
----------------
STORY.EXE <---------------- Story Brain Program
STORY.DOC <---------------- Sysop's Information
UPGRADE.DOC <---------------- Upgrade news
SETUP.BAT <---------------- Automatic setup batch file
REGISTER.DOC <---------------- Registration information
CONVERT.EXE <---------------- Create an Advevnture Conversion Program.
All of these files should be in this ZIP, if they are not, don't
take a chance! Call The Brainex System and get a good copy or view the
file on a few local boards to see if you can find a complete copy.
The setup of Story Brain is simple, all you need to do is type:
SETUP
STORY.EXE will be copied to your BRAINEX directory, and
the other story files will be copied to BRAINEX\STORY.
Use the CA2SB.EXE to convert Create an Adventure format story files
to Story Brain format. Just copy all your CREATEx.DAT and CREATEx.NAM
files to the BRAINEX\STORY directory and run CA2SB. You may then delete
the CREATEx files from the BRAINEX\STORY directory.
Once you have setup the door, you must then create a a batch
file to call the door. A batch file for a GAP BBS might look like this:
@ECHO OFF
STORY
If you run a multinode BBS, use the NODE= command. Running story on
node 2 would look like:
STORY NODE=2
The file BRAINEX\STORY\NODELOCK.DAT will be created to shut out
other nodes while the door is in use. If for some reason the
program does not exit normally, the file NODELOCK.DAT will be left
in the BRAINEX\STORY directory. Delete this file to allow normal
operation.
You will also need to modify your doors menu files and the data
file that tells the BBS what your doors are and the security
level needed to access them. For GAP, these are respectively:
DOORM
DOORMG
DOORS.DAT
Please refer to your BBS documentation for details on
setting up these files.
The Following sysop functions are available while awaiting
keyboard input :
F5 - Shell to DOS.
F8 - Twit user and return to BBS.
F10 - Initiate chat with user.
CF10 - Answer user page bell.
Home - Main user stats.
End - Displays sysop keys available.
PgDn - Secondary user stats.
Up Arrow - Increase user's time remaining by 5 minutes.
Dn Arrow - Decrease user's time remaining by 5 minutes.
One of the nicer features about using the TWIT key, is the user
is not told that "the sysop wants them to return to the BBS".
Instead, a very plain and simple message of "returning you to the
BBS" is displayed. This way, the user is given no indication
that the sysop is hovering about.
When using the F5 shell to DOS key, to return to the door
program, simply type EXIT at the DOS command prompt. It is not
necessary to change directories back to the door directory.
STORY is smart enough to know which drive and directory the
door program is in and will reset the defaults upon return from
DOS.
The Up and Down Arrow keys increase and decrease the user's time
respectively by 5 minutes for each press of the key. There is no
indication of what is occurring (except by the fact the user's
time remaining will change), so the sysop should try not to have
a lead finger. The increase or decrease is effective only while
the user is in Story Brain.
This version of Story Brain is a DEMO VERSION. Keep a few things
in mind though while you're at it. This door is released "As Is" and
there is *NO* warranty or guarantee that it will work for you and
not cause any problems. You have chosen to use this door, YOU are
responsible for any unfortunate problems that may develop from its
use or misuse. I will gladly listen to any suggestions or
problems you may have, and I will do my best to fix whatever
needs to be fixed. I can not be held responsible for any problems
you may have, whether directly or indirectly due to the use of the
door or its utilities or associated files.
Please read REGISTER.DOC for information on how you can register
your copy of Story Brain. The Questions Utility will only work on
a registered version, and only one story may be accessed.
For complete support, contact me on The Brainex System.
Your questions will be quickly and cheerfully answered!
Many thanks to Carey Nash, whose inspiration made this game possible!
Have Fun!
